There are a lot of relationships that develop in Chanda’s Secrets. Chanda has relationships with her mother, Mrs. Tafa, Esther, Soly, and Iris. To begin Mrs. Tafa is the next door neighbour of Chanda. She is very rich and treats Chanda and her family like they are together in a bigger family, but not related. At the beginning Chanda did not like Mrs. Tafa that much. “Mama why is Mrs. Tafa so mean. She is not mean. She’s Mrs. Tafa. Pay no attention. She means well,” (Stratton 31). As Lilian left for Tiro Chanda was in charge of Soly, Iris, and if she needed any help she was to ask Mrs. Tafa. Later on when Chanda has not seen her mother in a very long time she wants to go to Tiro, and Mrs. Tafa will not let her go. “Fine. Go ahead. Break your mama’s heart. Break your own heart while you are at it,” (Stratton 166). Chanda rides in a truck to Tiro and eventually finds her mother and takes her to the Tiro clinic. Once Chanda calls Mrs. Tafa she does not want Chanda to bring Lilian to Bonang because you will not be able to hide AIDS there. “I am tired of hiding and being afraid. I am not ashamed of AIDS! I am tired ashamed of being ashamed!” (Stratton 181). They head back to Bonang. Mrs. Tafa and Chanda forgive each other and Mrs. Tafa explains that she thought it was for the best, not having the shame with AIDS. The relationship between Chanda and Mrs. Tafa get stronger after the incident. Also Mrs. Tafa told her how Emmanuel had testing for AIDS, he found out he was positive and shot himself. Chanda stood up for her mother and Mrs. Tafa is now standing by her Emmanuel. Friendship takes time to grow and communication helps solve problems.
